NORTHAMPTONSHIRE WOMEN – JOHNS TROPHY versus CAMBRIDGESHIRE
Well done to the ladies of the Women’s Section of Jackson Grundy Bowls Northamptonshire for the excellent win over Cambridgeshire in the Inter County Johns Trophy Competition.
The match was played at 12 noon on Saturday, 8th June, 2013, at Fordham BC, Cambridgeshire, and the County players knew that they would be in for a most competitive match against the hosting County, for their opponents have a sprinkling of international players and are always hard to beat in this premier national competition.
On a rather cold and windy afternoon, not normally conducive to good bowling, the County ladies were off like a shot out of a gun as they immediately piled up a most impressive lead after just 4 ends of 21 shots at 29-8 shots with all 6 rinks winning. Another end across the green saw that lead increase to 23 shots, and by the half way mark in the match the lead had risen to a most encouraging 30 shots.
Cambridgeshire is not a County to give in and so it proved over the next few ends as they made considerable inroads into the deficit to be just 12 shots behind after 15 ends of play, and at this stage they were on a bit of a roll and threatening to snatch victory. The County players, however, had other ideas, and they stemmed the tide and increased their lead, albeit by just 1 shot, to be 92-79 ahead after 18 ends.
The County players did not let up over the last few ends of the match, far from it, and with a flourish to the finish, several of the rinks picked up valuable shots, no more so than Val Betts’ rink as they collected a count of 4 on the last end to overtake and win by 3 shots, and that of Audrey Height who, being 6 behind with 3 ends to play, almost pulled off a victory against the noted international Ellen Falkner but had to settle for defeat by 1 shot.
Of the other winning rinks, Sharon Tansley’s was the highest with a 15 shots advantage and Brenda Bishop and Jan Bradley both secured 6 shots wins.
The Final score was Northamptonshire 113 shots (18 pts) – Cambridgeshire 89 shots (4 pts) Rink scores, Cambridgeshire skips only, as follows:
Rink 1. Margaret Watts/Chris Cooper/Pam Lewis/Audrey Height 17 shots – Ellen Falkner 18 shots
Rink 2. Alison Dring/Wilma Walker/Yvonne McKee/Brenda Bishop 20 shots – J Christie 14 shots
Rink 3. Rebecca Wigfield/Celia Morris/Hilary Sharpe/Sharon Tansley 27 shots – D Smith 12 shots
Rink 4. Pat Starsmore/Pat Bodily/Jill Welch/Jan Bradley 19 shots – J Stevens 13 shots
Rink 5. Maggie Edwards/Sandra Mawson/Sue Graham-Hole 12 shots – C Salisbury 17 shots
Rink 6. Chloe Wordingham/Heather Lack/Emma Gray/Val Betts 18 shots – S Pender 15 shots
