The Men’s Section of Bowls Northamptonshire embarked on its Inter County ‘Middleton Cup’ campaign with the first Group Stage match, on Saturday, 31st May, 2014, against Bedfordshire BA, played at Kingsthorpe BC, and what a match it turned out to be.

The Bedfordshire players have never been a quiet bunch, and this match was no exception, some of their players being extremely noisy at every opportunity, which contrasted very much with the County’s generally quiet approach. In the event, whether either approach was successful is debatable for, after a very intense and competitive affair, the match was tied in shots and rink wins.

After 5 ends of play the County had a 5 shot lead at 35-28 shots, with each team having 3 rinks leading at this stage, but after another 5 ends, the lead had swung in favour of the visitors at 62-57 to them. The County then went back in front at the three quarter stage by just 4 shots, and with a good run of scores over the next couple of ends this lead increased to 12 shots, but only temporarily as Bedfordshire pegged the score back to 5 shots after 18 ends of play across the green.

With just 1 rink left playing its last end, the County had a lead of 3 shots to try to preserve, but with his final bowl of the match, the young Bedfordshire skip, former Junior International Tom Cawdell, played a very good bowl which managed to tip away the County’s closest bowls to make himself a count of 3 shots, and the match was tied, much to the joy of his team-mates, many of whom ran onto the green to congratulate him.
Final score was Northamptonshire 117 shots (11 points) - Bedfordshire 117 shots (11 points). Rink scores, Beds skips only, as follows:

Rink 1. Dave Flippance, Jonathan Brown, Roger Tansley & Paul Broderick 21 shots – Rhys Lee 20 shots
Rink 2. Dave Love, Matt Pownall, Andrew Manton & Darren Childs 13 shots – Tom Cawdell 31 shots
Rink 3. Richard Lemon, Callum Height, Alan Ashby & Jamie Walker 21 shots – Glyn Milbourne 15 shots
Rink 4. Daniel Height, Martin Gearey, John Haines & Vernon Gearey 15 shots – Grant Osborne 18 shots
Rink 5. Tony O’Leary, Connor Cinato, Phil Exley & Neil Corbyn 31 shots – Ryan Stewart 10 shots
Rink 6. Neil Rolfe, Jason Bryan, Neil McKee & Jim McKee 16 shots – Kevin Tift 23 shots
